From Lizard Lives – August 2021 Landewednack School & Little Lizards Nursery

We were so sad that, with only a week remaining of the summer term, we were forced to close our two junior bubbles due to two separate confirmed Covid cases. Not the end of term goodbye we wished to give to our junior children – especially our Year 6s. Puffins class remained open, as did Little Lizards and prior to the closures the children (and staff!) managed to pack a lot in!

Despite the weather, we were able to hold our annual Sports Day, albeit in a slightly different way as to how we would usually host this event! The children each took part in a series of sporting activities within their bubbles; sadly we were unable to invite parents to watch so lots of photographs were taken instead! The overall winners were Team Kynance Cove. Congratulations to all of the children who took part and huge thanks to Miss Wells and Mr Green for setting up and organising the course.

Covid restrictions in place at the time also prevented our Country Dancers from performing at the annual village Mid-Summer Bonfire event, so our dancers took to the playground and entertained the whole school and Little Lizards instead. The children all sat socially distanced and within their correct bubbles and thoroughly enjoyed the dancing. Huge thanks to Mr Green for teaching the children the dances and thank you to Elaine for the children’s costumes.

Our annual summer production was also limited by restrictions in place at the time. Despite this, the junior children created a fantastic filmed performance of “Tuishi Pamoja” on stage in costume and within their bubbles. This was filmed and all pieced together for parents to enjoy online. This is a story that celebrates diversity and teaches the importance of accepting those who are different from us. “Tuishi Pamoja” – pronounced too-eesh-ee pah-mwoh-jah is Swahili for “we want to live together”. Well done Miss Wells and Mr Green again!

Miss Wells and Mr Green arranged the annual Year 6 Leavers Assembly which this year had to take place online as all of our leavers were isolating. All of the children joined the assembly with their families and reminisced about their time at Landewednack. Lots of memories were shared and photos shown, giving the children a truly wonderful send off as they prepare for secondary school.

Children in Puffins class were awarded their certificates for the completion of their Yoga sessions with Mrs Humby. Thank you very much to Mrs Humby, who is a qualified children’s yoga instructor, and is thrilled to share her love of yoga with the children. We are really happy to be able to offer yoga as part of our PE, so that the children can enjoy the benefit of developed mindfulness, concentration, flexibility, strength and stamina. The children all thoroughly enjoy their yoga time and Mrs Humby will continue these sessions in the autumn term.

The end of term also saw us bid a fond farewell to two of our staff members. Nursery Manager Suzanne Willey will be starting a new chapter in her life with a new career, which will be closer to home and to her family. Suzanne has worked at our Little Lizards nursery for nearly 15 years; firstly as a nursery nurse and then as our nursery manager. She has had a huge positive impact on the development of our nursery provision and our wrap around care. Most of the children in our school have benefitted from being with Suzanne during their time at Little Lizards. Suzanne will be greatly missed by all of us here at Landewednack and Little Lizards. We also said goodbye to our Catering Manager, Vicky McClarity, who left us to take up a new post at Mullion School. Goodbye and good luck wishes to them both.

Little Lizards will be hosting their annual Summer Holiday Club, for more enquiries please call the school – Ext 3. We return to school and Little Lizards on Wednesday 8th September. We would like to wish everyone a very safe and happy summer.
